“It is essential to know that sins and acts of disobedience are, necessarily, very harmful. Their harmful effects upon the heart are akin to the harmful effects of poison upon the body, though the effects vary in their levels and intensities. So is there any evil or harm in this world, or in the Hereafter, except that it is due to sins and disobedience?”
— Ibn al-Qayyim

Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Qur’an:
”And by the soul and Him Who perfected it in proportion. Then He inspired it (with knowledge of) what is wrong for it and what is right for it. Indeed he succeeds who purifies it (his own soul). And indeed he fails who corrupts it.” (Surat Ash-shams 91:7-11)
”Whatever evil befalls you, is from yourself” (Surat An-nisa’ 4:79)
”Verily the soul is inclined to evil except when my Lord bestows His Mercy (upon whom He will)” (Surat Yusuf 12:53)
--- BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF GOOD DEEDS
”Verily Salah prevents from sinful and illegal deeds” (Surat Al-ankabut 29:45)
”If you do good, you do good for your ownselves; and if you do evil, you do it against yourselves” (Surat Al-isra’ 17:7)
"Is there any reward for good other than good?" (surah rahman, ayah 60)
---
Surah Zalzalah:
So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it. And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it. (ayahs 7-8)

SINS HAVE A DETRIMENTAL EFFECT
"Do protect yourself from sin, since sin brings down Allah's anger." (Ahmad)
"When a person sins, he develops a black spot in his heart. If he repents, his heart is cleaned and purified. But if he continued sinning, then the black spot keeps on increasing. This is the rusting of heart mentioned in the Quran." (Ahmad, Tirmizi & Ibne Majah)
"I seek refuge in Allah's from the following: (1) when and where the immodest deeds are done openly and publicly, those people will get plague and such modern diseases that were totally unknown to their elders. (2) when people are dishonest in weighing and measuring, they will suffer from famine, hardship and tyranny from rulers. (3) when people stop giving Zakah (or poor-due) they get only little water and had there been no animals there would have been no rain at all. (4) when any people break a pact or covenant, Allah's puts over them an enemy from among others who seize their property by force." (Ibne Majah)
"O Messenger of Allah, which people are the best?" He said, "Whose life is long and his actions good." He said, "And what people are the worst?" He said, "Whose life is long and his actions bad." [Muslim]
Ibn ul-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "In conclusion, the servant, when he turns away from Allah and becomes preoccupied with sins (in this world), he loses days of his true life (in the hereafter). He will see the consequence of losing them the Day he says, "He will say, 'Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life [i.e. true, everlasting life in the Hereafter].'" [al-Fajr (89):24]”
---
A scholar said: “A good deed produces light in the heart, strength in the body, light on the face, increase in provision and love in the hearts of others; while a bad deed brings about darkness in the heart, darkness on the face, decrease in provision and hatred in the heart of others”.

The tired-looking man in well-worn clothes stood at the large intersection wearing a large sign that read, “Have a family, will work for food.” I had passed him many times as I made my way around town, yet somehow I never got around to offering help to this fellow traveller as I went about my work. One day as I was going past the same intersection, I saw him once again steadfastly standing there. The traffic had stopped for a red light, and in the lane to my left a lady quickly got out of her car with two full bags of groceries, which she promptly handed to the man. They exchanged a few words before the lights changed, she jumped back in her car and drove away. The man’s face lit up, his weariness lifted by this unknown woman’s kindness. Carefully hugging the groceries, he slowly walked away from the crossroads; his radiant smile said it all. In a fraction of a moment’s time his day had changed, and hers, and mine, and everyone else who sat in their cars and witnessed the exchange. The traffic still flowed, everything was the same, yet it was so very different. Abdullah ibn Umar R.A. reported that the Messenger of Allah SWT said: “The Muslim is the brother of his fellow Muslim; he should not mistreat him or let him down. Whoever meets the needs of his brother, Allah will meet his needs, and whoever relieves a Muslim of some distress, Allah will relieve him of some of the distress of the day of resurrection. “I have seen wrong actions killing hearts, and their degradation may lead to one becoming addicted to them. Turning away from wrong actions gives life to the heart, and opposing yourself is best for it.”
— Abdullah ibn Mubarak

Allah SWT has created: Angels with reason but having no desires; animals with desires but no reason, And man with both reason and desires.
Therefore, if one’s reason is stronger than his desires, he is like an Angel… while if his desires are stronger than his reason, he is like an animal.
(Ibn Al-Qayyim RA)
