Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) loves you, O little one
Let us all take a drop from the sea of affection and mercy that our Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had for everyone, especially the children- and also tell our younger ones how much the Prophet (pbuh) truly loved them.
Read ahead:
“None of you truly believes (i.e. has true faith) unless I am dearer to him than his son, father and all mankind”.
Love for the prophet (pbuh) starts from childhood, then grows and develops during adulthood. Our children know very little about the good character of the prophet (pbuh) and do not realize how much he loved them, remembered them, recommended their good welfare and care for them, at the time when they knew very well the qualities, words and hidden secrets of famous singers or football players or race champions or others.
The duties of parents are enormous towards their children, and every one of us is a protector and guardian of his immediate charge and is responsible for the action of those persons who are committed to his charge. Let us narrate to our children the mode of the prophet’s life and conduct, and treat them fairly with kindness and mercy. Let's follow the example of the prophet (pbuh), both in his sayings and actions (practices), love him and get our children to love him and ask Allah (S.W.T.) to make us one of his followers and gather us under his banner.
Hereby are some of the prophet’s statements that portray in simple and beautifully phrased words the love of the prophet (pbuh) for children, and his interaction with them on several occasions and different circumstances:
1- The prophet (pbuh) kisses children:
‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her-R.A.A.-) reported that there came some Bedouins (few desert Arabs) came to Allah’s messenger (pbuh) and said: Do you kiss your children? He said: Yes. Thereupon they said: By Allah, but we do not kiss our children. Thereupon Allah’s messenger (pbuh) said: Then what can I do for you if Allah (S.W.T.) has taken away mercy from your heart?! Bukhari transmitted it. The prophet (pbuh) also said: He who does not show mercy, no mercy would be shown to him.
2- The prophet (pbuh) does not like children to be hurt:
Buraida reported that one day the prophet (pbuh) stood on the pulpit giving a sermon. Both his grandsons Hasan and Husain entered the mosque wearing red shirts nearly stumbling with. The sight so much touched the prophet (pbuh) that he could not help bringing his talk to a pause, stepped down and helped them on the pulpit. He carried them and seated them by his side. Then he remarked: “How true is the word of Allah (S.W.T.)! Verily, your worldly goods and your children are but a test”. An-Nasa’i transmitted it.
3- The prophet (pbuh) gives way for children to mount on his back:
One night the prophet (pbuh) came to the mosque for prayer, carrying one of his grandsons. He made the child sit beside him and he stood for the prayer. Once as he put his head in prostration, it went on rather too long. After the prayer was over, people asked, “Messenger of Allah how is it that one of the prostrations took up so much time? Has anything happened or were you receiving a revelation?” He replied: “nothing of that sort happened, but my son got on my back and I did not like to put him down till he fulfilled his desire”. An-Nasa’i transmitted it.
4- The prophet (pbuh) makes children laugh:
Sa’id Bin Abi Rashed related that Ya’la Bin Mirra reported that once they went out with the prophet (pbuh) for a meal they have been invited to. On their way, they saw Husain (grandson of the prophet) playing around. The prophet (pbuh) moved ahead stretching his hands for him. Husain tried to run away here and there while the prophet (pbuh) was getting him to laugh until he got hold of him. He placed one of his hands below his chin, the other hand on top of his head, kissed him and said: “Husain is from me and I am from Husain. May Allah love those who have love for Husain. Husain is a nation of the nations. Ibn Majah transmitted it.
5- The prophet (pbuh) names children and warmly embraces them:
On the authority of Yusuf Bin Abdullah Bin Salam (R.A.A.), who said: Allah’s messenger named me Yusuf and he seated me in his lap. Muslim transmitted it.
6- The prophet (pbuh) commands that orphan children be taken care of:
Sahl Bin Sa’d (R.A.A.) related that Allah’s messenger said: I and one who takes care of an orphan will be like these two in paradise, and the narrator raised his forefinger and middle one to illustrate this. Bukhari transmitted it
7- The prophet (pbuh) solicits permission from children:
A glass of water was brought to the prophet (pbuh) and he drank. On his right side, there was a young boy who was the youngest of all people sitting with him, while the elderly men were sitting on his left side. He said to the young boy: Would you give me permission to pass it on to the old men first?. He replied: I would rather not give preference to anybody when it comes to your favour on me O Allah’s messenger, and so he gave it to him. Bukhari transmitted it.
8- The prophet (pbuh) eats with children:
“Umar Bin Abi Salamah (R.A.A.) related: When I was a child under the guardianship of the prophet (pbuh), I used to run my hand inside the bowl when eating. He said to me: ‘O ‘Boy, recite the name of Allah, the exalted, eat with your right hand, and from the stuff which is in front of you. Bukhari transmitted it.
9- The prophet (pbuh) never killed children in the battlefield:
Najda wrote to Ibn Abbas asking him: Did the prophet (pbuh) kill children? Ibn Abbas wrote back to him: The prophet (pbuh) never killed children, so don’t kill children. Muslim transmitted it.
10- The prophet (pbuh) greeted children first by saying: Peace be upon you:
Anas (R.A.A.) reported: Once I was with a group of children and the prophet (pbuh) passed by and said: Peace be upon you ‘O ‘Boys. Ahmad transmitted it
11- The prophet (pbuh) used to mount children on the riding animal with him and set values in them on firm grounds:
On the authority of Ibn Abbas (R.A.A.) who said: One day I was behind the prophet (pbuh) and he said to me: Young man, I shall teach you some words (of advice): Be mindful of Allah (S.W.T.), and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah (S.W.T.), and you will find him in front of you. If you ask, ask of Allah; if you seek help, seek help of Allah (S.W.T.). Know that if the Nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, it would benefit you only with something that Allah has already prescribed for you; and that if they gather together to harm you with anything, they would harm you only with something Allah has already prescribed for you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried. Tirmidhi transmitted it.
12- The prophet (pbuh) does not like preferring one child to another:
Nu’man Bin Bashir (R.A.A.) said: my mother asked my father for a gift, so he gifted that to me. She said I would not agree to that until I call Allah’s messenger to witness. He said: He took him by hand to the prophet (pbuh), for I was only a young boy, and said: O Messenger of Allah, the mother of this son of mine, daughter of Rawaha, asked me for some gift and she liked me to ask for your consent to be on witness to that event. The prophet (pbuh) asked: O Bashir, have you another child beside that? He said: Yes. Then he inquired: Have you made a similar gift to him? He said: No. The prophet (pbuh) said: Then do not take me a witness for I do not bear witness for an injustice. Bukhari transmitted it.
13- The prophet (pbuh) never got angry with children:
Umm Qais Bint (daughter of) Muhsin (R.A.A.) reported that she brought her baby son, who had not yet begun to take food, to the prophet (pbuh) who took him in his lap. The child passed water on his clothes. The prophet (pbuh) sent for water, sprinkled it on the place and did not wash the cloth. Bukhari transmitted it.
14- The prophet (pbuh) takes precautions so that children receive only the lawful and refuses to accept the unlawful for them:
Abu Hurayra narrated that Al Hasan Bin Ali took one date from the dates of Sadaqah (charity in optional form or alms giving) in his mouth. The prophet (pbuh) said: “Kikh Kikh” in order to spit it out of his mouth, and then said to him: Didn’t you feel that we don’t eat from Sadaqah (charity in optional form or alms giving)? Bukhari transmitted it.
